HDMI: An introduction
If you're in the market for Plasma/LCD, Projector, Blu-ray or just about anything new piece of electronic equipment, you may have been advised to seek out a model featuring HDMI.
Put simply, HDMI has the potential to deliver uncompressed high definition pictures and digital sound through a single cable. it has many advantages, for the consumer, the most obvious being no need for masses of bulky cables. Aside from practical and aesthetic considerations, HDMI has the ability to transfer a signal from source to display completely in the digital domain. This makes HDMI ideal for big screen images, by transmitting high definition pictures without all the digital/analogue conversions, resulting in losses and errors are minimised.
To cut a rather long story short, HDMI delivers the folowing tangible benefits:

Better pictures: HDMI cuts out the need for all those DA & AD conversions, Digital to Digital = a better picture.
Future proofing: HDMI can handle high definition pictures. High Def is the future, it's coming and it's fantastic!
Less Clutter: Typically HDMI cables thinner than 'mains flex'and have small terminations. They carry picture and digital sound, reducing that quagmire of scarts, component leads & more, down to a single cable.
Standardisation: HDMI looks set to be used on all major consumer electronics devices in the future. This means cross-compatibility and easy, plug and play connectivity.
Communication: The way devices can communicate along the HDMI lead looks set to introduce new functionality. An example of this, exact resolution matching for fixed panel devices, like home cinema projectors.
